Events Satellites

Film and discussion event with Georgia Horgan, Kirsten Lloyd, Hardeep Pandhal and Nishana Sukul

This event included a screening of extracts from First Contact, Trobriand Cricket: An Ingenious Response to Colonialism and La Operacion, three documentary films chosen by Satellites 2015 participants Hardeep Pandhal and Georgia Horgan, in conversation with academics Kirsten Lloyd and Nishana Sukul.

Set in Papua New Guinea, First Contact (1984) and Trobriand Cricket (1973) examine the interactions between white settlers and native tribes. La Operacion (1982), by Puerto Rican filmmaker Ana Maria Garcia, deals with the impact of mass serialisations and medical trials conducted on Puerto Rican women in the 1960s. Together, the three films will prompt further conversation surrounding cultural imperialism, ethnography, race and gender.

During the Satellites Programme 2015 participants were paired with interdisciplinary researchers from Edinburgh College of Art, at the University of Edinburgh. Brought together to develop specific parts of their practice and exchange knowledge, this event has developed out of the conversations initiated as part of this process.
