Join us for a weekend of free, socially distanced, outdoor play and creative activities for families and under 12s.

Imagine a Calton Hill in the future, overgrown with plants and flowers and taken over entirely by children! Collective PLAY: Children of the Hill will offer lots of ways to explore nature and the outdoors together as a family, learn about the plants and animals living on Calton Hill, and get creative with loose parts play.

We estimate your visit will last around 1-3 hours. Booking is essential, and when you come along to your pre-booked timeslot you’ll receive:

• A pack of nature-themed ‘loose parts’ materials designed to encourage inventive, child-led play

• A Children of the Hill fabric activity pouch designed by artist Holly White, which includes a short story set in the future, on a Calton Hill taken over by children along with materials used by the children in the story – such as seeds, clay and fabric.

• Three family-friendly trails for exploring Calton Hill, including our brand new Nature Trail to help you identify the plants, animals and minibeasts who make their home here.

• A visit to our current exhibition Planet of People where you can strike a pose in a 3D body scanner and see your image become part of a giant planet!

Every care has been taken when organising this event to ensure the safety of visitors, staff, and to adhere to COVID-19 government guidelines:

• Pre-booked tickets for single households will stagger arrivals and maintain social distancing

• Materials packs have been carefully pre-packaged using clean gloves and will be yours to keep after the event.

• Though all play will take place outdoors, the collection point for materials packs is indoors, in our Hillside space, for one family at a time to enter. Arriving on time for your booked time slot will reduce the need for queueing, and help to keep our staff safe.

• Collective is based in a large public park, Calton Hill, with plenty of space for exploring. We encourage visitors to Collective PLAY to take their materials out into the park for play, and to practice social distancing between households at all times. Come dressed for the weather!

• Hand sanitiser will be available at various points around Collective.
