Mick Peter

2 August – 30 September 2012

Lying and Liars was a new installation created specifically for Collective's space by Glasgow-based artist Mick Peter. The exhibition title is derived from British novelist B.S. Johnson's idea that narrative fiction is a form of 'lying' and the show explores the conflict between storytelling and formal experimentation by mixing different sculptural and architectural idioms. Alongside the exhibition, Johnson’s short film Paradigm was shown in the Project Room.

This festival exhibition was potentially Collective’s last in its Cockburn Street Gallery as it moved to the City Observatory on Calton Hill. Collective has a role of developing new talent in the visual arts in Scotland and internationally; Mick Peter exemplifies this process. Mick was first selected for New Work Scotland Programme in 2000, its inaugural year. Since that time Mick went on to exhibit internationally and was included in the British Art Show 7 in 2010. Collective took this opportunity to present Mick’s work to an international audience during Edinburgh Art Festival 2012 as a chance to reflect upon the organisation’s activities over the last 12 years as it prepared for further developments.

Lying and Liars on Film, 3 August 2012
The Filmhouse, Edinburgh.
A range of novelist B.S. Johnson's short films were screened alongside films by experimental filmmakers and artists, which mixed reflexive and experimental forms and a way of investigating the inadequacies of language. Artist Mick Peter and writer and curator Steven Cairns programmed this screening, which coincides with Peter’s new exhibition at Collective that also features Johnson's 1969 film Paradigm. The programme will included: BS Johnson, Fat Man on a Beach, 1973; Stefan and Franciszka Themerson, THE ADVENTURE OF A GOOD CITIZEN, 1937; Tony Steyger and Steve Hawley, Language Lessons, 1994; Peter Greenaway, H is for House, 1976; and Nathaniel Mellors, Seven Ages of Britain trailer.
